Classroom Network Connectivity

  1. For each student and instructor, set up an independent network consisting of three systems: two servers and a client.

  2. On each network, label the servers SrvA and SrvB respectively and the client as Localhost.

  3. On SrvA and SrvB, install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 server.

  4. On Localhost, install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 workstation and Windows XP.

  5. Synchronize the system time in each network.

Install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 Server

    To install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 Server:

  1. Insert Redhat Enterprise Linux CD 1 in the DVD-RW drive.

  2. On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 page, verify that the install or upgrade an existing system options is selected and press Enter.

  3. On the Welcome to Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server page, select Skip and then press Enter.

  4. On the Red Hat Enterprise installation page, click Next.

  5. On the Language Selection page, in the language selection list box, verify that the English (English) option is selected and click Next.

  6. On the Keyboard Configuration page, in the Keyboard selection area, verify that U.S. English is selected and click Next.

  7. If necessary, in a warning message box that prompts as a new disk is used, click Yes.

  8. On the disk partitioning setup page, from the partition layout drop-down list, select Create custom layout and click Next.

  9. On the Disk Setup page, create new partitions with the following properties:

    Type Mount Point Size
    ext3  /boot  2000 MB 
    swap    Twice the RAM size 
    ext3  20000 MB 

     

  10. Click Next.

  11. On the Boot Loader Configuration page, click Next.

  12. On the Network Configuration page, configure network parameters.

  13. On the time zone selection page, in the Selected city drop-down list, verify that the America/New York option is selected and click Next.

  14. On the set root password page, in the Root Password text box, type p@ssw0rd and press Tab.

  15. In the Confirm text box, type p@ssw0rd and click Next.

  16. On the install software page, select the Customize now option and click Next.

  17. On the package group selection page, uncheck the GNOME Desktop Environment check box.

  18. In the left pane, select the Development option.

  19. In the right pane, check the Development Libraries and Development Tools check boxes.

  20. In the left pane, select the Base System option.

  21. In the right pane, check the System Tools check box and uncheck X Windows System and then click Next.

  22. On the about to install page, click Next to start the installation.

  23. On the Congratulations page, click Reboot to reboot the system.

  24. On the Setup Agent page, select Exit.

  25. Log in as root, providing p@ssw0rd as the password.

  26. Enter iptables -F

  27. Enter service iptables save

  28. Enter service iptables restart

  29. Open the /etc/selinux/config file.

  30. Change the parameter SELINUX=enforcing to SELINUX=disabled.

  31. Save and close the file.

  32. Reboot the system.

  33. Copy the packages from CD.

Install Windows XP Professional

    To install Windows XP Professional on the system labeled Localhost:

  1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD in the CD-ROM drive.

  2. In the Welcome to the setup screen press Enter.

  3. Accept the license agreement.

  4. Create a 15 GB partition for the C drive.

  5. Select the portion to install the XP OS and press Enter.

  6. Select Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press Enter.

  7. The system will restart and the next part of the installation will begin. Select the appropriate regional and language settings.

  8. Enter the appropriate name and organization for your environment.

  9. Enter the Product Key.

  10. Specify Windows1 as the name of the computer.

  11. Set the Administrator’s password as p@assw0rd.

  12. Confirm the password.

  13. Select your time zone.

  14. Verify that the Typical Settings option is selected.

  15. Specify MYGROUP as the workgroup name.

  16. Click OK to accept the default screen resolution settings.

  17. Click OK again.

  18. After the system restarts, the Welcome to Microsoft Windows page is displayed. Click Next.

  19. Click Skip to continue without connection to the Internet.

  20. On the Ready to Activate Windows page, select the No and Remind me every few days options and click Next.

  21. On the Who will use this computer page, in the Your Name text box, type admin and click Next.

  22. Click Finish.

Customize Windows

    To customize Windows:

  1. Customize the Windows desktop to display the My Computer and My Network Places icons.

    1. Right-click the desktop and choose Properties.
    2. Select the Desktop tab.
    3. Click Customize Desktop.
    4. In the Desktop Items dialog box, check the My Computer and My Network Places check boxes.
    5. Click OK and click Apply.
    6. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

  2. To configure Network connection:

    1. Click My Network Places.
    2. Click View network connections
    3. Right click Local area connection and Click Properties
    4. Select Internet Protocol for TCP/IP. Click Properties
    5. Select Use the following IP address
    6. Enter 192.168.0.4 in the IP address field and press Tab.
    7. Enter 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet mask field. Press Tab.
    8. Enter 192.168.0.1 in the Default gateway field.
    9. In the Preferred DNS server, enter 192.168.0.1 and click OK.
    10. Click OK.
    11. Click OK.
    12. Close Network Connections window.

  3. Configure Microsoft® Outlook® Express.

    1. Choose Start→E-mail to open Outlook Express.
    2. In the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box, click OK.
    3. In the Internet Signup window, click Finish.
    4. In the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box, click Cancel.
    5. Click Yes to close the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box.
    6. Close the Outlook Express window.

Install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 Workstation

    To install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 workstation on the system labeled Localhost:

  1. After installing Windows, insert the Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3 DVD drive.

  2. On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 page, verify that the Install or upgrade an existing system option is selected and press Enter.

  3. On the Disc Found page, press the Down Arrow key to select Skip and then press Enter.

  4. On the Red Hat Enterprise installation page, click Next.

  5. On the language selection page, in the language selection list box, verify that the English (English) option is selected and click Next.

  6. On the keyboard configuration page, in the Keyboard selection area, verify that the U.S English option is selected and click Next.

  7. If necessary, on the installation page, verify that the Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 options is selected and click Next.

  8. On the disk partitioning setup page, from the partition layout drop-down list, select Create custom layout and click Next.

  9. On the disk setup page, create partitions with the following properties.

    Type Mount Point Size
    ext3  /boot  110 MB 
    swap    Twice the RAM size 
    ext3  10000 MB 

     

  10. Click Next.

  11. On the boot loader configuration page, click Next.

  12. On the network configuration page, in the Hostname section, select Manually and click Next.

  13. On the time zone selection page, in the Selected city drop-down list, verify that the America/New York option is selected and click Next.

  14. On the set root password page, in the Root Password and Confirm text boxes, type p@ssw0rd and click Next.

  15. On the install software page, select the Customize now option and click Next.

  16. On the package group selection page, click Next.

  17. On the about to install page, click Next to begin the installation.

  18. On the congratulations page, click Reboot to reboot the system.

  19. On the Welcome page, click Forward.

  20. On the License Information page, click Forward to accept the license.

  21. On the Firewall page, from the Firewall drop-down list, select Disabled and click Forward.

  22. When a warning is displayed, click Yes to override existing firewall configuration.

  23. On the SELinux page, from the SELinux Setting drop-down list, select Disabled and click Forward.

  24. In the message box that is displayed, click Yes to accept the changes made to SELinux setting.

  25. On the Date and Time page, on the Date & Time tab, set the current date and time.

  26. Click Forward.

  27. On the Hardware Profile page, verify that the Do not send profile option is selected and click Forward.

  28. In the message box that is displayed, click No do not send to reconfirm the choice made.

  29. On the Create User page, click Finish to complete the basic configuration.

  30. In the warning box that is displayed, click Continue to skip the user creation process.

  31. In the Welcome screen of the GUI, specify root as the user name.

  32. Specify p@ssw0rd as the password.

For the Instructor:

  1. Create a directory named Packages in the / directory.

  2. Copy all the packages from the Packages folder of the Redhat 5.3 installation DVD to the /Packages directory.

  3. Copy the 085106Data folder from the course CD-ROM to the / directory of your system.

  4. Copy all the packages from the Downloadable_Packages folder to the /Packages directory.

Lesson Lab Setup

    The lesson lab setup is the same as that of the course set up and the packages are copied from the /media/[name of the media]/Server directory of the installation media to a folder in the / directory. Also copy the packages from the \085106Data\Downloadable_Packages folder to the same folder where you copied the packages.
