Topic A0:            Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Student computer requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·     A keyboard and a mouse.

·     A Pentium III or 4 Processor (or higher)

·     At least 128 MB of available RAM (256 MB RAM recommended)

·     At least 1.8 GB of available hard-disk space

·     A CD-ROM drive

·     A color monitor (SVGA) with Highest Color (32-bit) and support for 1024×768 resolution minimum

·     Internet access, if you want to download the Student Data files from www.courseilt.com

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1     Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. If the student machines have Internet access, and they are behind a software or hardware firewall, install the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com. (You can also use Windows 2000, but the screen shots in this course were taken using Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.)

2     Adjust the computer’s display properties as follows:

a            Open the Control Panel and click on Appearance and Themes

b            Choose Display to open the Display Properties dialog box.

c            On the Settings tab, change the Color setting to True Color (24 bit or 32 bit) and the Screen resolution to 1024 by 768 pixels.

d            Click OK. If you are prompted to accept the new settings, click OK and click Yes. Then, if necessary, close the Display Properties dialog box.

3     Install WordPerfect 12 from the WordPerfect Office 12 CD, as follows:

a            Start the installation.

b            In the Setup Type dialog box, select Customized Installation.

c            In the Custom Setup dialog box, expand the WordPerfect icon.

d            Expand WordPerfect. Display the Legal Tools drop-down list and select This feature will be installed on the local hard drive.

e            In the Quattro Pro drop-down list, select This feature will not be available.

f            In the Presentations drop-down box, select This feature will not be available.

g            Continue the installation by accepting the remaining default options.

h            When the Product Registration window appears, select Register Later and click OK.

i            If you have an Internet connection, allow the program to check for updates, and click Finish.

4     Download the Student Data files for the course. You can download the Student Data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.

a            Create a folder named Student Data at the root of the hard drive.

b            Connect to www.courseilt.com/instructor_tools.html.

c            Click the link for Corel WordPerfect to display a page of course listings, and then click the link for WordPerfect 12: Advanced.

d            Click the link for downloading the Student Data files, and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

5     Copy the data files to the Student Data folder.
