Frequently asked questions and instructor notes

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires that they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course.

Hardware requirements

Each studentï¿½s personal computer should have:

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ A keyboard and a mouse

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Intel Pentium 4, Intel Centrino, Intel Xeon, or Intel Core Duo (or compatible) processor

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ 1GB RAM

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ At least 2.5GB of available hard-disk space for installation

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ A DVD-ROM drive

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ A monitor with at least 1280 ï¿½ 960 resolution and 24-bit color

Software requirements

You will need the following software:

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Windows 7; Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (certified for 32-bit editions); or Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 3

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Adobe Illustrator CS5

Network requirements

The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Downloading the Student Data files from www.axzopress.com (if necessary)

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Completing the topic on Adobe Help in the ï¿½Getting startedï¿½ unit

Classroom setup instructions

Before you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1ï¿½ï¿½ Install Windows 7 according to the software manufacturerï¿½s instructions. If the student machines have Internet access, and they are behind a software or hardware firewall, install the latest critical updates and service packs.

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Note: You can also use Windows Vista or Windows XP, but the screenshots in this course were taken in Windows 7, so studentsï¿½ screens might look somewhat different. Also, some of the following setup instructions might differ slightly.

2ï¿½ï¿½ With flat-panel displays, we recommend using the panelï¿½s native resolution for best results. Color depth/quality should be set to High (24 bit) or higher.

3ï¿½ï¿½ Install Adobe Illustrator CS5 according to the software manufacturerï¿½s instructions. If you have the full version of Creative Suite 5, you need to install only Illustrator CS5 for this course.

aï¿½ï¿½ On the Installation Options screen, from the Install list, choose Selected Components.

bï¿½ï¿½ Clear all check boxes except the one for Adobe Illustrator CS5.

cï¿½ï¿½ Continue with the default installation. When asked whether to download updates, click Yes.

4ï¿½ï¿½ Start Adobe Illustrator CS5, and press F1 to launch Illustrator Help. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the Help files.

5ï¿½ï¿½ If you have the data disc that came with this manual, locate the Student Data folder on it and copy it to the desktop of each student computer.

ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ If you donï¿½t have the data disc, you can download the Student Data files for the course:

aï¿½ï¿½ Connect to www.axzopress.com.

bï¿½ï¿½ Under Downloads, click Instructor-Led Training.

cï¿½ï¿½ Browse the subject categories to locate your course. Then click the course title to display a list of available downloads. (You can also access these downloads through our Catalog listings.)

dï¿½ï¿½ Click the link(s) for downloading the Student Data files. You can download the files directly to student machines or to a central location on your own network.

eï¿½ï¿½ Create a folder named Student Data on the desktop of each student computer.

fï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Double-click the downloaded zip file(s) and drag the contents into the Student Data folder.

CertBlaster software

CertBlaster pre- and post-assessment software is available for this course. To download and install this free software, students should complete the following steps:

1ï¿½ï¿½ Go to www.axzopress.com.

2ï¿½ï¿½ Under Downloads, click CertBlaster.

3ï¿½ï¿½ Click the link for Illustrator CS5.

4ï¿½ï¿½ Save the .EXE file to a folder on your hard drive. (Note: If you skip this step, the CertBlaster software will not install correctly.)

5ï¿½ï¿½ Click Start and choose Run.

6ï¿½ï¿½ Click Browse and navigate to the folder that contains the .EXE file.

7ï¿½ï¿½ Select the .EXE file and click Open.

8ï¿½ï¿½ Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted for the password, enter c_illcs5.
