Frequently asked questions and instructor notes
Topic A : Classroom setup
All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires that they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course.
Hardware requirements
Each student’s personal computer should have:
· A keyboard and a mouse
· A 1GHz or faster processor
· 256 MB RAM (or higher)
· At least 2GB of available hard drive space after operating system install
· DVD-ROM drive
· SVGA monitor at 1024 × 768 or higher resolution
· A printer is required to complete Activity C-3 in the “Proofing and delivering presentations” unit, although students can opt not to print.
Software requirements
You will need the following software:
· Microsoft Windows 7
· Microsoft Office 2010 (minimally, you can install only PowerPoint and Excel)
· A printer driver (An actual printer is not required, but students will not be able to complete “Printing presentations” in the “Proofing and delivering presentations” unit unless a driver is installed.)
Network requirements
The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:
· Internet access, for the following purposes:
– Downloading the latest critical updates and service packs
– Opening Help files, downloading templates, and accessing clip art from Office.com. If online Help is not available, students will not be able to complete Activity B-1 in the unit titled “Getting started.” Students will also need Internet access to complete activities in the units titled “Working with graphics” and “Modifying presentations.”
– Downloading the Student Data files from www.axzopress.com
(if necessary)
Classroom setup instructions
Before you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.
1 Install Windows 7 on an NTFS partition according to the software publisher’s instructions. After installation is complete, if the student machines have Internet access, use Windows Update to install any critical updates and Service Packs.
Note: You can also use Windows Vista or Windows XP, but the screen shots in this course were taken in Windows 7, so students’ screens might look different.
2 With flat-panel displays, we recommend using the panel’s native resolution for best results. Color depth/quality should be set to High (24 bit) or higher.
3 Install Microsoft Office 2010 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. Perform a default installation. You’ll need both PowerPoint and Excel installed.
4 Start Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010. Then do the following.
a Activate the software. After activation, the Welcome to the 2010 Microsoft Office System dialog box appears.
b Select “Don’t make changes.”
c Click Finish to close the dialog box.
5 Disable Protected View settings for PowerPoint as follows:
a From the File tab click Options
b Select Trust Center, and click Trust Center Settings.
c Select Protected View, and clear Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet.
d Click OK twice to save settings.
e Close PowerPoint.
6 If you have the data disc that came with this manual, locate the Student Data folder on it and copy it to the desktop of each student computer.
If you don’t have the data disc, you can download the Student Data files for the course:
a Connect to www.axzopress.com.
b Under Downloads, click Instructor-Led Training.
c Browse the subject categories to locate your course. Then click the course title to display a list of available downloads. (You can also access these downloads through our Catalog listings.)
d Click the link(s) for downloading the Student Data files. You can download the files directly to student machines or to a central location on your own network.
e Create a folder named Student Data on the desktop of each student computer.
f Double-click the downloaded zip file(s) and drag the contents into the Student Data folder.
7 Move the Student Data folder from C:\ to the My Documents folder of each student’s user account.
8 Start Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010. Then do the following:
a Activate the software. After activation, the Welcome to the 2010 Microsoft Office System dialog box appears.
b On the Privacy Options screen, verify that “Search Microsoft Office Online for Help content when I’m connected to the Internet” is checked.
c Verify that “Download a file periodically that helps determine system problems” is cleared.
d Verify that “Sign up for the Customer Experience Improvement Program” is cleared.
e Click Next.
f Select “I don’t want to use Microsoft Update.” Click Finish.
CertBlaster software
CertBlaster pre- and post-assessment software is available for this course. To download and install this free software, students should complete the following steps:
1 Go to www.axzopress.com.
2 Under Downloads, click CertBlaster.
3 Click the link for PowerPoint 2010.
4 Save the .EXE file to a folder on your hard drive. (Note: If you skip this step, the CertBlaster software will not install correctly.)
5 Click Start and choose Run.
6 Click Browse and navigate to the folder that contains the .EXE file.
7 Select the .EXE file and click Open.
8 Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted for the password, enter c_pp2010.
Topic B: Frequently asked questions
On page 1-16, the answer to the second question has been updated to include the following:
2 List the methods you can use to advance slides manually when running a slide show.
Click the mouse; right-click the slide and choose Next from the shortcut menu; click the Menu icon in slide show controls (bottom-left corner of the screen) and choose Next; and press the N key, Enter, Page Down, Right Arrow, Down Arrow, and Spacebar.
