Frequently asked questions and instructor notes

Topic A0:   Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires that they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Hardware requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·   A keyboard and a mouse

·   Intel® Pentium® 4 or equivalent processor

·   512 MB RAM

·   1 GB of hard-disk space

·   A DVD-ROM drive for installation

·   A monitor set to a minimum resolution of 1280 x 960 and 24-bit color or better. (Users of LCD or widescreen displays should choose the monitor's native resolution, if possible.)

Software requirements

You need the following software:

·   Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2, or Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified for 32-bit editions); updated with the most recent service packs

·   Dreamweaver CS4

Network requirements

The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:

·   Internet access, for the following purposes:

Updating the Windows operating system at update.microsoft.com

Downloading and installing QuickTime (required to complete activity A‑4 in the unit titled “Multimedia”)

Accessing the Adobe Exchange site (required to complete activity B-2 in the unit titled “Rollovers and behaviors”)

Downloading the Student Data files, if necessary

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1   Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.

Note: You can also use Windows Vista, but the screen shots in this course were taken in Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.

2   If the operating system is Windows XP, then launch the Control Panel, open the Display Properties dialog box, and apply the following settings:

·    Theme—Windows XP

·    Screen resolution—1280 by 960 pixels

·    Color quality—High (24 bit) or higher

Note: To avoid a blurred or distorted screen, users of flat panel or widescreen displays should either choose the monitor's native resolution, or disable image stretching and scaling, if possible.

3   If Windows was already loaded on this PC, verify that Internet Explorer is the default Web browser. (If you installed Windows yourself, skip this step.)

a   Click Start and choose All Programs, Internet Explorer.

b   Choose Tools, Internet Options.

c   Check “Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.”

d   Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

e   Close and reopen Internet Explorer.

f    If a prompt appears, asking you to make Internet Explorer your default browser, click Yes.

g   Close Internet Explorer.

4   Connect to the Internet.

5   Open Internet Explorer and navigate to update.microsoft.com. Update the operating system with the latest critical updates and service packs.

6   Install Dreamweaver CS4 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.

7   Install the latest version of QuickTime (version 4 or later). The latest version can be downloaded from http://quicktime.apple.com. Accept all defaults during the installation.

8   Install the Adobe Flash Player plugin for Firefox as follows. (Without this, students will be unable to view Flash-based content in Live View in the Multimedia unit.)

a   Go to http://www.adobe.com and click the Get Adobe Flash Player link.

b   Click Different operating system or browser.

c   Under Select an operating system, select Windows Vista/XP/2003.

d   Under Select a browser, select Firefox.

e   Click Agree and Install Now, and continue with the onscreen instructions.

Note: These steps might become outdated if changes are made to the Adobe Web site. Searching the Adobe site for “Flash Player” will likely take you to the same destination.

9   Change Internet properties as follows:

a   Start Internet Explorer. Choose Tools, Internet Options.

b   On the General tab, click Use Blank and click Apply.

c   On the Advanced tab, under Security, check “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer” and click Apply. (This option appears only if you updated Windows XP with Service Pack 2.)

d   On the Connections tab, click Setup to start the Internet Connection Wizard.

e   Click Cancel. A message box appears.

f    Check “Do not show the Internet Connection wizard in the future” and click Yes.

b   Choose Tools, Folder Options and activate the View tab.

c   Clear the check box for “Hide extensions for known file types.”

d   Close Windows Explorer.

11 Create a folder called Student Data at the root of the hard drive (C:\).

12 If you don’t have the CD that came with this manual, download the Student Data files for the course. You can download the data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.
