Frequently asked questions and instructor notes

Topic A0:   Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires that they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Hardware requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·   A keyboard and a mouse

·   Intel® Pentium® 4 or equivalent processor

·   512 MB RAM

·   1GB of hard disk space for Dreamweaver CS4: additional space needed for operating system and Office installation

·   A DVD-ROM drive for installation

·   A monitor set to a minimum resolution of 1280 x 960 and 24-bit color or better. (Users of LCD or widescreen displays should choose the monitor's native resolution, if possible.)

Software requirements

You need the following software:

·   Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2, or Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified for 32-bit editions), updated with the most recent service packs

·   Dreamweaver CS4

·   Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, or another e-mail client (required to complete Activity A-3 in the “Links” unit)

·   Microsoft Office 2000, XP, 2003, or 2007 (required to complete Activity B-2 in the “Web sites and pages” unit)

Network requirements

The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:

·   Internet access, for the following purposes:

Updating the Windows operating system at update.microsoft.com.

Completing Activity A-3 in the “Links” unit

Downloading the Student Data files (if necessary)

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1   Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.

Note: You can also use Windows Vista, but the screen shots in this course were taken in Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.

2   If the operating system is Windows XP, then launch the Control Panel, open the Display Properties dialog box and apply the following settings:

·    Theme—Windows XP

·    Screen resolution—1280 by 960 pixels

·    Color quality—High (24 bit) or higher

Note: To avoid a blurred or distorted screen, users of flat panel or widescreen displays should either choose the monitor's native resolution, or disable image stretching and scaling if possible.

3   If Windows was already loaded on this PC, verify that Internet Explorer is the default Web browser. (If you installed Windows yourself, skip this step.)

a   Click Start and choose All Programs, Internet Explorer.

b   Choose Tools, Internet Options.

c   Check “Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.”

d   Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

e   Close and reopen Internet Explorer.

f    If a prompt appears, asking you to make Internet Explorer your default browser, click Yes.

g   Close Internet Explorer.

4   Open Internet Explorer and navigate to update.microsoft.com. Update the operating system with the latest critical updates and service packs.

5   Change Internet properties as follows:

a   In Internet Explorer, choose Tools, Internet Options.

b   On the General tab, click Use Blank and click Apply.

c   On the Advanced tab, under Security, check “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer” and click Apply. (This option appears only if you updated Windows XP with Service Pack 2.)

d   Close the Internet Options dialog box, and close Internet Explorer.

6   Install Dreamweaver CS4 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions.

7   Install Microsoft Office 2000, XP, 2003, or 2007 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. Accept all defaults during installation. (This is required to complete Activity B-2 in the “Web sites and pages” unit.)

8   For each student, create an e-mail account in the installed e-mail client. (Students don’t actually send or receive messages in this course, so a fully functional e-mail account isn’t needed. Without an e-mail client, students can’t complete Activity A-3 in the “Links” unit.)

9   Display file extensions:

a   Start Windows Explorer.

b   Choose Tools, Folder Options and activate the View tab.

c   Clear the check box for “Hide extensions for known file types.”

d   Close Windows Explorer.

10 Create a folder called Student Data at the root of the hard drive (C:\).

11 If you don’t have the CD that came with this manual, download the Student Data files for the course. You can download the data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.

a   Connect to www.axzopress.com.

b   Under Downloads, click Instructor-Led Training.

c   Browse the subject categories to locate your course. Then click the course title to display a list of available downloads. (You can also access these downloads through our Catalog listings.)

d   Click the link(s) for downloading the Student Data files, and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

12 Copy the data files to the Student Data folder.
