Topic A0:            Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Hardware requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·     A keyboard and a mouse

·     A Pentium 4 processor with a minimum clock speed of 1.4 GHz

·     A minimum of 512 MB of RAM (more RAM will improve performance)

·     A 7,200 RPM hard drive (RAID storage will improve performance)

·     3 GB of available hard-disk space

·     A DVD-ROM drive for installation

·     A Microsoft DirectX-compatible sound card

·     Speakers or hear-through headphones

·     Color monitor (SVGA) with Highest Color (32-bit) (1024×768 minimum resolution support)

Software requirements

You will need the following software:

·     Windows XP SP2 or higher

·     Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0

·     Adobe Premiere Pro Functional Content

·     WordPad (Confirm that this text processing utility bundled with Windows launches successfully)

·     QuickTime 7 or higher (can be downloaded free of charge from www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html)

·     Windows Media Player

·     RealPlayer 9 or higher

Network requirements

The following network components and connectivity are also required for this course:

·     Internet access, for the following purposes:

·         Downloading the latest critical updates and service packs for Windows from www.windowsupdate.com

·         Activating the Premiere Pro 2.0 software after installing it

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1     Install Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. If the student machines have Internet access, and they are behind a software or hardware firewall, install the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com.

2     From the Control Panel, open the Display Properties dialog box and apply the following settings:

·         Theme — Windows XP

·         Screen resolution — 1024 by 768 pixels

·         Color quality — 32 bit or higher

3     Open My Computer and choose Tools, Folder Options. Select the View tab. Clear Hide extensions for known file types. Click Apply to All Folders.

4     Open Windows Media Player and complete any setup steps necessary to run the application.

5     Open RealPlayer and complete any setup steps necessary to run the application. Choose Select media types for RealPlayer from a list. Uncheck all types under Windows Media.

6     Install the current version of QuickTime.

7     Install Adobe Premier Pro 2.0 according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

a          When prompted, enter the Serial Number for the software.

b          Accept the default location for the installation, or browse to choose another.

c          Be sure to also install Premiere Functional Content, if it is a separate component. (Some distributions may include this on a different disk or as a separate installation choice.)

d          Activate the software using the Internet, or activate by telephone.

8     Install the data from the DVD provided with this book. Because of the size of the data set for this course, the data will not be available for download. If you don’t have the DVD, contact customer service to obtain another copy.

Setup instructions for every class

Every time you teach this course (including the first time); you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1     If necessary, reset any defaults that have been changed in previous classes.

2     Delete the contents of the Student Data folder, if necessary. (If this is the first time you are teaching the course, create a folder named Student Data at the root of the hard drive. For a standard hard drive setup, this will be C:\Student Data.)

3     Copy the data files to the Student Data folder.

CertBlaster software

CertBlaster pre- and post-assessment software is available for this course. To download and install this free software, students should complete the following steps:

1     Go to www.axzopress.com.

2     Under Downloads, click CertBlaster.

2     Click the link for Premiere Pro 2.0.

3     Save the .EXE file to a folder on your hard drive. (Note: If you skip this step, the CertBlaster software will not install correctly.)

4     Click Start and choose Run.

5     Click Browse and then navigate to the folder that contains the .EXE file.

6     Select the .EXE file and click Open.

7     Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted for the password, enter c_pro2.
