Frequently Asked Questions and Instructor Notes

Topic A0:            Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Student computer requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·     A keyboard and a mouse

·     PC with a Pentium 75 MHz processor or higher

·     At least 20 MB RAM

·     146 MB available hard disk space

·     A 3 ˝-inch floppy disk drive if you want to load the data files from disk

·     A VGA or higher-resolution monitor (Super-VGA is recommended)

·     A printer is not required for the entire course, but students will not be able to complete all the activities in Unit 7 without a printer

·     Internet access is required if you want to load the data files from the www.course.com Web site

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1     Install Windows 95 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. (You also can use Windows® 98 or Windows NT® Workstation version 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later, although screen shots might look slightly different if you do.)

2     Install Excel 2000 according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. A default installation is all that is required.

3     Download the Student Data examples for the course. You can download the student data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk. (A diskette with the data files is also included with this manual.)

1            Connect to http://www.courseilt.com.

2            Click the download link for Excel 2000: Module 1.

3            Follow the instructions that appear on your screen to save the data files.

Setup instructions for every class

Every time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1     Start Excel, drag the Formatting toolbar below the Standard toolbar.

2     If necessary, choose Tools, Options, click the View tab, and check Status bar.

3     If necessary, reset any defaults that have been changed in previous classes. There are no defaults that should have been changed by students during class, but if you know of any, you should reset them.

4     Delete the contents of the Student Data folder, if necessary. (If this is the first time you are teaching the course, create a folder called Student Data at the root of the hard drive.)

5     Copy the data examples for the course to the Student Data folder (see the instructions in the preceding section about how to download the data files).

Topic B:            Frequently Asked Questions

1          Is this course Microsoft-Office User Specialist (MOUS) certified?

Yes, this course, along with the Intermediate-level course in this series, covers all the objectives required to prepare students to take the Proficiency-level Microsoft Office User Specialist exam for Excel 2000. Combined with the advanced-level course, the series covers all the objectives required to prepare students to take the Expert-level Microsoft Office User Specialist exam for Excel 2000.

Topic C:            Course Notes

Please note that this course was updated in January, 2001 to better support MOUS requirements. Some content might have been added, and some might have changed. If you are teaching a class and have manuals bought both before and after January, 2001, you should compare the books carefully to be sure they are the same.

Topic D:            Additional Information

In some editions of the course, there is an instructor note on p2-5, next to step 6 of activity B-1, which states, “Students will continue to use this workbook in the next activity. The file YearlySales.xls contains the completed data.”

In fact, there is no such file, but it is not at all necessary in order to teach the activities in Unit 2. Ignore the instructor note.

This error will be fixed in future reprints.
